Mary Margaret Thurman

Born on August 14, 1919 in Boston, Massachusetts, Mary Margaret O’Brien was one year old when the U.S. Congress finally recognized women’s right to vote and the first commercial radio broadcast in the US from Station KDKA Pittsburg.

Mary’s father was a fisherman of cod off the Outer Banks of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, places where both of her parents had emigrated and met in the early 1900’s. Her mother was a homemaker caring for Mary’s older sister, Kathryn, and in future years for her four younger brothers, Tom and Bill (twins), Charles, and baby brother, Earl.

She was 10 years old when the stock market crashed and the country experienced the Great Depression.  Her father’s work as a fisherman kept them with healthy food and a great appetite for fish and seafood, especially scallops, cod, and halibut, her favorites.  Mary graduated from high school in East Boston in 1936, took a job which she thoroughly enjoyed, as a waitress at Sharif’s, an uptown restaurant where she was well liked.  It was here that she developed her love of cooking while sharing her charitable comradery.

When Mary turned 21 in August of 1940, she would vote in her first presidential election for Franklin Roosevelt.  Mary, a life-long Democrat, and a lover of politics would pass that passion on to all of her children.  That following year in December 1941, the Japanese would attack Pearl Harbor and the US would enter the Second World War.  Sometimes turning 21 can be quite a year, one you don’t forget.  Little did she know at the time that her future husband would come to Boston via the US Navy and their future would take them nearly 2000 miles across the country to the Midwest, a town called Kansas City.  Mary would be a War-Bride. She met her future husband, Earl Thurman, a dashing sailor, through a mutual friend.  The courtship was relatively short for war-time and they were married in 1944.  When the war ended they would move to Kansas City, Missouri, to begin their lives together.

Mary loved card games, especially pinochle. Her wit was razor sharp. Anyone holding cards in those rounds much preferred to be on her side, as she would use her wry humor to joust against opponents and further thwart their clever strategies.

Mary advised and loved her husband of more than 50 years. When he was struck with ALS, she cared for him at home for six years in the house where she raised six children. Those children she showered with her deep well spring of unconditional love are eldest sons Earl Michael Thurman, Joseph Brien Thurman, Mark Aloysius Thurman, daughters Mary Kay Thurman and Carolyn Marie Thurman, youngest son John Vincent Thurman and one grandchild Rachel.

100 Years is hard to imagine in terms of the many things that Mary has seen – from Women’s suffrage, commercial radio, the last of the horse drawn ice wagons, to men walking on the moon, to all of the technological inventions we carry in our pockets.  We observe not so much the loss of our dear Mother, but instead cherish the many gifts of love she has bestowed upon us. In gratitude eternal we hold her love in our hands. If possible, please give to the ALS Foundation, to whom Mary held gratitude for their kind assistance in caring for her husband.

Visitation and Service

James “Jim” Willis Hultman, 93, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the Kansas City Hospice House.  Jim was born on December 5, 1925 to Alma (Loeb) and John William Hultman in Oelwein, Iowa.  He was the eldest boy in a family of 3 sisters and 5 brothers. Having been raised on the farm, he moved to Kansas City in 1952, having served in both the Infantry and Air Force during WWII. He married Edith Eleanor Patch in June of 1953. Their first child, Debbie arrived in 1954, followed by John and James Jr (Jim) across the next 6 years. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from AIB College in Des Moines, Iowa, he went to work for General Motors as an Accountant. Shortly after their marriage, he joined the family restaurant business, where he spent the next 25 years. In 1981, Jim completed his apprenticeship and was certified as a Journeyman Roofer, where he worked until a well deserved retirement. After retirement, he discovered the hobbies of both square dancing and golf (he tore up the greens in the morning and the dance floor in the evening!). One of Dad’s greatest passions came about 8 years ago when he started serving at the Village Church Food Pantry and Clothes Closet. Throughout our lives, Dad was an incredible teacher! But he didn’t teach through just words…but also by his actions! He taught us an incredible work ethic, but most importantly, he taught us to love. He prepared us to be loving spouses and parents, and he also taught us to have compassion and love for others! For me, there are 62 years of wonderful memories that I could share about my Dad…today, I would like to share one. On Tuesday morning, as Dad’s doctor came in to check on him, she looked at Dad and said “Jim, I’m officially changing your name to Ironman, I have never seen anyone with the strength and fortitude that you have”. As we celebrate Dad going to his new Home, not only is he Dad, for me, he truly is IRONMAN!

While teaching, she persevered and earned a Master’s Degree from Webster University furthering her professional credentials.  She was a career teacher, primarily at Brookridge Elementary where she nurtured relationships with colleagues and pupils alike.

Carol was a member of Valley View United Methodist Church which is now Church of the Resurrection Overland Park Campus. She was a proud member of the Tri Delta and Tri Psi sororities which enriched her life tremendously through sisterhood.

Her devotion to family and friends was her hallmark and the central focus of her life.  She was the absolute best wife, mother, doting grandmother, great grandmother and friend.  Loving concern for her family and friends with cards, letters, stickers, confetti, phone calls, and visits were her true joy in life.

Carol was an avid sports fan and paid particularly close attention to the Chiefs, Royals and Kansas Jayhawks.  The “Martyball” era for the Chiefs was particularly enthralling especially when Marty greeted her at the front door when she arrived at a barbeque gathering the Schottenheimer’s graciously hosted at their home. The Roy Williams era at Kansas takes particular significance when she got to meet Roy at KCI and noticed how short he is compared to his players.  She also loved Bill Self’s toughness and the relentless Royals of 2014 and 2015.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Beatrice who adopted her at birth and raised a real tiger of a woman; her daughter Shari Pate and granddaughter Tressa Canaday.

She is survived by her loving husband Cleon Musgrave whom she married July 22, 1995 in her cherished South Dakota; her son Gary Hanson and his companion Bea Wake; daughters Kenna (Jeremy) Fries and Wendy (Timothy) Canady; grandchildren Rebecca and Eric Hanson; Shari’s children Ashton (Chris) Canavan, Aaron Pate, Aspen Newsome; Tyler and Tia Canaday and Jackson Fries; and great grandchildren Cassidy and Cadence Canavan.
